The Parent-Child Home Program
(PCHP)

"Soaring to success through books and play..."

Developed in 1965, the Parent-Child Home Program stresses the parent-child verbal communication is important to early childhood brain development.  Parent-Child Home Program is in communities in the United States, Canada, and other countries.

How the Program Works

Trained Home Visitors visit families with two and three year old children twice a week for two years.  In play sessions with the parent and child, the Home Visitor models verbal interaction and learning through play, using carefully chosen books and toys.

By greatly increasing verbal interaction, the Parent-Child Home Program strengthens families and prepares children to succeed in school.

Why The Parent-Child Home Program is Special

Through the Parent-Child Home Program, parents experience the joy and value of reading, talking, and playing with their children.  The Home Visitors help parents to Realize their role as their child's first teacher.  They generate excitement  about learning ad verbal interaction in the home and through books, toys, and play.  Home visits are scheduled at the convenience of parents, so that moms and dads who are working, in school, or in training programs can easily participate.  The books and toys used in the visits are provided to families at no cost, and families are encouraged to use them as much as possible.

The Parent-Child Home Program Makes a Difference

More than twenty years of research has shown that the Parent-Child Home Program increases communication between parents and children, creating a language-rich home environment and contributing directly to their children's success in school.
